Rebuilt tall Tetra Pak storage baskets in various weaves

These were a set of baskets I made a few years ago that served their purpose for a while… then failed. I have since learned through trial and error that beverage cartons such as Tetra Pak should always, where possible, be woven double. At the time of making these baskets I didn’t have enough cartons to make them all double layered – just the rim and base. They had a hard life and faced some rough treatment and here’s what happened:

But I couldn’t throw away all that hard work – and fortunately since then I have saved up a lot of cartons – so I unpicked them all and wove them up double, repairing the odd loop that had become damaged from being squashed. The results you can see above and I’ve fallen in love with them once again.

So now they are going to be used to store my growing collections of recycling to be woven… a happy ending. I suppose you could describe them as repurposed repaired and rewoven recycled baskets to store recycling…

I also used this as an opportunity to try out some weaving comparisons:

Square with alternate sides | Square base with round sides | Round base with round sides

And a pattern comparison

Alternate squares vs Stripes

Would you be interested in instructions for this project?

We are currently in the process of putting together instructions for some of our designs. We plan to ask for a small fee to fund the development of a ‘Loop Maker’ tool. In the meantime many of our designs are low tech and can be achieved using household tools and materials. If you would like to express interest in instructions for the above project, we’d be glad to hear from you!
