Carrier bag cushions

Lightweight plastic bags | Windmill Loop (standard weave)

I had seen the method of linking loops to make clothing used by Irina Arsentieva and it’s been in the back of my mind to try it with the ‘arms’ created in Windmill Loop. It just needs a material flexible enough, and these plastic bags seemed a good material to test it on.

These cushions were even easier to make than a simple basket. Each used up 84 supermarket carrier bags and weigh 2kg – it’s a lot of plastic. The panels zip together quickly and even better – they are stuffed with all the handles and seams that I cut off to make the loops – so they are waste free.

They’re very sturdy and comfy. I hope they will last a long time, perhaps I’ll get round to making some covers for them.

This design means they can be quickly pulled apart and woven into any other shape. If I come up with any other great ideas for weaving with carrier bags, I can donate these loops to the cause.

Would you be interested in instructions for this project?

We are currently in the process of putting together instructions for some of our designs. We plan to ask for a small fee to fund the development of a ‘Loop Maker’ tool. In the meantime many of our designs are low tech and can be achieved using household tools and materials. If you would like to express interest in instructions for the above project, we’d be glad to hear from you!
